Catch and/or Release? Or however you say it!!
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:35:10 PM »
I have just gotten done reading a TON of posts about Pleasant Canal and all the fish caught and the alligator blues and stripers eating stripers and blah blah blah!

One question I have for everyone. I did not see any mention in these above posts about keeping or releasing the said fish. Just curious!

Do you all keep the fish or does it depend on what and how many you catch of WHAT species?

Steve

Hi Steve,

I guess it is up to the individual and I can bet this topic will have a lot of input.  I am strictly catch and release as I am the only one that will eat fish caught in the wild waters off NJ in my house, I would rather release them to fight another day.

With that said I have no problem with anyone keeping there legal catches as for right now it is still legal to do so.  Enjoy it while you can.  :P

I mainly catch and release for a few reasons.  My main reason is because after hoofing it to my fishing spot and being that I like move and walk a lot, I just don't feel like carrying around fish on top of my gear.  No one else in my family eats fish and in my extended family only my mother and father in law will eat what I bring home.  I also despise cleaning fish at home...and there aren't many cleaning stations on the beach, like the marinas have at the dock.  I don't mind cleaning fish, just not at home on the counter.  Maybe most imporantly, I like to return them so that they can be caught again.

However, I will keep fish, if I know someone will eat them.  On PB, I have given my catch away after they have been filleted.  I will also keep a fish that is legal and will die because I caught it.  I will also keep any keeper fluke or flounder caught and if I had the ability, I would take my legal limit of crabs daily, as these are my 2 favorite seafoods to eat!

I also have no problem with anyone that keeps legal fish.  What they do with them, is none of my business.  They are completely entitled to them and just because I don't keep them, doesn't mean someone else can't.  I also have nothing against someone who keeps a trophy fish, just because it is a trophy fish.  This is a sport and just because I might choose to release a fish, doesn't mean someone else has to do the same thing.  I am fishing as well and hooking the fish the same way the other fisherman is...

I guess I am the same way as you Paul as far as not wanted to clean them at home, nor will the GF appreciate the smell of it, but she loves eating flounder when we go out to Red Lobster or something. I would rather keep SOME fish but not all, and its too bad IBSP does not have a fish cleaning station like they do a air filling station within the park.

As far as crabs, if I catch a bushel, damn well know they are coming home with a six pack of whatever my mood is.
