Topwater fishing?
« on: July 31, 2009, 08:37:44 PM »
Ok, i dont know if that term is used in saltwater fishing but... I went fishing off the jetty at higbees beach in Cape May. I kept seeing fish pop their heads up out of the water. You would see a bunch of circular ripples appear pretty often for the whole morning. I was using a bucktail and caught a throwback flounder, but any clues about what kind of fish were at the surface. And what would you use for topwater fishing. A floater? Some kind of floating lure?

Welcome and nice catch!

No idea what type of fish were breaking water, could have been bait fish, bunker, spearing or anything of that sort.  My best guess would be snapper blues though.  They were probably breaking the water chasing after bait, usually small bunker or spearing this time of year.

Yes, top water is used as a term in saltwater fishing.  Poppers are probably your most common top water lures, but you can also use top water or floating swimming plugs and lures.  Top water is great type of fishing and probably the most explosive and hardest hits you will get fishing.  Give the top water lures a try!

Good luck!

Cool, thanks for the info. I just read in another topic, use a steel leader with bunker chunks and some split shot to drop it just a couple inches below the surface.

Right now we are being inundated with rain fish up in the Toms River area so any thing that will come close to that will work.

If that were me I would be throwing a top water small needle fish top water with a teaser that mimicked a rainfish.

Happy Catching
