Fluke Masters Tournament with Reel Fun
« on: August 03, 2009, 08:44:04 AM »
Good Morning Fellow Anglers,

Fished the Fluke Masters Tournament sponsored by the Community Fire Company of Leonardo Saturday in georgous weather as we left the dock at 5:30 am. We heard there were 70 boats entered and kickoff time was 6 am so we headed directly to the Big A (Ambrose Channel) to give it our best shot. Angler Bill Kuczewski and party from Stroudsburg, PA were aboard for what turned out to be a long and somewhat frustrating day.

I have to admit, my group fished really hard as we moved to numerous spots along the Ambrose Channel looking for either a good 5 fish weight for top prize or that one doormat for bragging rights for the tournament. Fishing with whole squid, peruvian smelts, peanut bunker and an assortment of other baits and bucktails. We did make our 5 fish requirement for a weigh in (we actually bagged 8 nice keeper fish) but as the fishing gods would have it, we didn't finish in the top 4 places needed to reward all our hard work. I haven't heard yet who the top four winners were. Last I heard the current top place total weight for 5 fish was 29 lbs.

Before heading out I was toying with the idea of heading down to Shrewsbury Rocks area, but decided for better or worse, not to go there so my party could get as much fishing time as possible and not eat up the time travelling up and down the coast. My thanks to the fire company for a well run tournament.

Tight Lines

Capt. John

Capt. John we had a 5 man crew in the tourney and we decided to head south to the rocks and the rattle snake *trust me you didn't miss much* after a few shorts we moved inshore and woke everyone up with a few 10-14lb gators and then back to the fluke... Nothing up the beach at all It wasn't till we hit Ambrose about noon that we got our first keeper in the boat! We did make the 5 fish requirement but fell WAY SHORT with just under 15 lbs total. All in all a nice day on the water 5 keepers up to 23"s 7 seabass 8 monster blues, 2 dog fish and a couple robins. Great job to the Fire Dept and we'll see you again next year!
