Cape May / Sunset Beach
« on: June 12, 2007, 07:18:39 PM »
Going down to Cape May next weekend to free load of the in-laws and stay at their condo. I started surf fishing Cape May last year. Did OK small strip bass, cocktail blues, sea bass, sea robins and weakfish. Bought some gulp baits, any suggestions on how to fish the gulp crab form the surf. I am going to fish the other gulp baits with leadheads and on spro jigs. Any suggestions would be a big help.

The best way to fish the gulp crab is to hook it from the bottom up through the top either on the right side of the shell or left side depending if you want to catch a right fined fish or left fined fish (only kidding).  Just remember a crab walks sideways so you want to mimic that.

should I fish it with or without a weight? Will a circle hook work ok?

Circle hook is good but use a non stainless one in case your line breaks at least the hook will disintegrate fairly rapidly.  I like the  Gamakatsu   brand they seem to be the sharpest.

I use a fish finder (slip sinker) with the lightest weight I can get away with and let the current help with the presentation.

Is the crab bait productive for weakfish or will any critter eat it?
