Rod Length

Just curious. Any Rod length better than the other? Is it better to have a 10' rather than a 7'? Better casting? Further? Or does it depend on the fish being fished?

TR.  Would help to know if you are fishing on a boat, the beach, a pier, jetties, etc.  Also, what you will be fishing for and if you will be using bait, metals, plugs, etc.

Ok well assume I am in the surf, being I posted in the "from the surf" forum, and fishing for Blues, Fluke, or stripers? Throwing chunks of bunker, squids and clams.

For fishing bait from the surf I would go with a 10' - 12' rod.  Look for one that will handle weights up to, at least, 5 oz.   If you fish a lot of nasty surf conditions, get one that is rated for 8 or more. 

Just make sure the rod you buy has plenty of highbtobgwtbip !

If you are going to chuck bait, I would definitely make sure the rod can handle 8oz.  I would look for a 10 or ll footer.  Especially if you plan on fishing the fall time in rougher water.  For lures, I prefer, a 9 or 10 footer and no longer.  I would definitely buy for what you plan on doing more of.  You can always take the 10 or 11 footer that you chunk with and throw hopkins, AVA, etc and vice versa.  Unless you plan or want to buy more than 1 setup...

Just make sure the rod can

I'd definitely go for something rated to 8oz.  You'll quite frequently need 5 or 6+ oz lead when throwing bait...plus the weight of the bait.

Hi Steve,

The guys are on the right track.  Being your so close stop over one day and I will show you my collection of rods and go through the reasons behind them.  Because conditions change so often your match up will also change.  Just remember that 95% of the time you will not be casting out as far as you can.  The reason for the long flight is when the fish are out past the outer bar and for that you will not only need a special set up but the skill to launch the 8&bait.

I would concentrate on casting mid range to start.  If you are going to be using bait a rod that will handle at least 5oz is right in the ball park some where in the 10 - 12' range.  My longest pole is 11' simply because of price.  Anything over that and you will be amazed at the cost just for the rod along.

If your set up is matched, rod, reel, line and whatever mode of catching device you will be using your ability to get to where you want the working end to go is greatly increased.

Just remember to check the specs on the pole and go from there.  It will tell you what you need to match your outfit up perfectly.

I build rods as a hobby, and to put a few bucks in my pocket. Nothing fancy, just a good working rod. As suggested in other posts a rod 10-12 feet that will handle 5-6 oz. is about what you'll need. Just finished one, Matched with a Diawa Emcast Reel casts real good.
