As for an actual model rod, I don't have experience with either manufacturer, although, they are both great companies.  My personal choice in what I would look for would be a 9 or 10 footer(9 feet is easier to handle, but the 10 footer will give you a little extra distance), 1 piece, if you can do it, medium heavy power moderate to fast action with a line rating up to at least 20lbs.  I would keep the lure/weight rating to as wide of a range as you can...say 1-4oz, unless you know what weight lures you want to throw.  Also remember, each rod is going to have a sweet spot where it throws so many ounces the best, but can handle lighter and heavier.

Good luck!  It's always fun buying fishing equipment ;D.

whs I build rods and thats just about where you want to be. Loomis and Lami are great rods. You might want to look at Gatorglass if your building your own rod. ;D

Something in 9' with med.heavy action.Good casting lenght with good hook set back bone.I'd lean towards a Tsunami or a Tica.If you decide you like surf fishing, then go for a more exspensive set up.Don't spend an arm and leg and then realize you don't care for it.

Something else I forgot to mention...you want a lightweight rod and reel.  Nothing too heavy or you won't be plugging for long.  If you have to buy a reel too, make sure it balances out the rod as best you can.  If you don't do your homework, you won't be happy after buying it and you won't want to plug and walk as much as you might if you had the best setup possible.

If you are ooking for a high- end rod (loomis, lami's are) dont overlook Fenwick.  They make a great rod with a super taper for casting distance.
