I met Rod and his son Jeff down in Barnegat for an "artificials only" trip. AKA "Let's just head out and chuck stuff and see what happens". We had no real solid intel as we left the dock close to 11 and headed into the bay. With all the talk of the scarcity of weakfish going around lately, Rod and I decided to test that theory out. And, at least by today's results, we proved the theory correct.
The day started out promisingly enough when, on his first cast, Jeff had a hook up! Turned out to be a small sea bass, which was promptly released.
We then tried a few other spots in the back bay with poor results before moving east to the sod banks, the inlet, and finally outside and up the beach. We marked fish here and there, but everything we stopped on turned out to be schools of cocktail blues which wreaked havoc on our plastics as they are so fond of doing.
We finally switched to jigging metals and caught our share of the little demons. Unfortunately that was all we could manage for the day.
All in all it was great to get out on this beautiful afternoon with Rod and Jeff! With the passing of the Harvest Moon and cooler temps on their way, the action can only get better from here!
