Side Scan Sonar- Hummingbird 1197-anyone have one?
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:04:49 PM »
Im a wreck and structure fisherman-The Hummingbird side scan sonar looks amazing in locating structure, wrecks and ridges but is it practical in working our areas?

Does anyone have one?

Can you share your experience

Thanks Ross

Capt Mike has the smaller version. I don't think he is very pleased with it.

I saw it in operation on his boat and thought it was so-so. I guess you have to get used to it to interpret what it is trying to tell you. Perhaps it was the size that made it so-so.  5hrug

It is a toy! I would not waste my money on it! See if Lowrance might demo one to you, they now have a unit out but same transducer. I do not think the size of the screen was the problem, just the technology versus the cost is not there... You have to go very slow and not good for depths of I think 100' plus. Works well in shallow fresh water though. If you still want one I will sell you mine really cheap...

Which model do you have? They supposedly increased the power

What makes me concerned is that they are not up front about the effective depth that it works in

Hope they can perfect it..Sure would be great to find the rock pile and fish on it with ease

My humminbird 917c has a quadrabeam transducer which scans the sides too it works good but its not a side scan. It does pick up fish to the left and right with different degree scans. It  works well.  But its not sidescan as advertised in the newer units. I also would not by another humminbird unit. I think I will get a Lowrance next. Hope this helps,  Good luck,, Eddie t^
