Who is the minority?

If the feds are the minority, then why should they be able to put a moratorium on any so called sanctions on our fish? If those reefs were not there nor would those fish. This should be the exception to the rule.

Let's look at it as diplomatic immunity; maybe the feds can understand that.

Would fishing be any good in 30 to 40 feet of water in South Jersey? And don't forget about the minimum depth clearance. South Jersey would have reefs that only could be built out of a few man hole covers. I know many might find it hard to believe but reef site locations are dependant on many factors and much thought and input goes into there location. Many people have worked long and hard to make NJ have one of the premier reef programs in the nation and would be ashame to watch it be ruined.

Unfortunately the contribution they made was allowing them to be placed in Federal Waters in the first place. ANYTHING outside of 3 miles is federal territory and thereby subject to federal rules.

To change the use (or enforce the intended use if you make that argument) of the reefs in federal waters requires them being designated as an SMZ (special management zone) which is a council process (in this case the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council)

It would not be the first time a state was granted such a designation on reef sites.

There is much more to the issue than that, I was merely focusing on the federal waters aspect since it was brought up.

FYI - The Nj DEP has stated to the NJOA in writing that they will petition the feds to have the traps removed from reefs in federal waters.

First, we must get them removed from state waters. There are powerful interests blocking our efforts. We have several approaches to moving the issue forward and all of them are in play. We'd like to see more people and organizations supporting the effort allow recreational anglers access to the reefs.
