Capt. Ron/Fishermen/Fridays Blowin in the Wind fishing!!!
« on: November 27, 2009, 04:24:36 PM »
Yes, we had the wind, but it didn't stop the fish from biting. Tough conditions and we needed the heavier jigs today. With the wind we drifted at 2.2 knots, most of the guys I know who troll think 3 knots is perfect!
Feel like a broken record everyday with the "Turn the handles thing" today it was turn them slow, not too fast or you will catch the blues.
Still, way too many customers bouncing their jigs when the fish are 15 ft. off the bottom...Lot's of lost tackle that way also...at $5 a pop for jigs, I'd listen to the Captain.
Tony the Lawyer finally had his day in court, leading the way with 7 fish, 3 keepers and the pool fish at 15 pounds!! Eddie was right behind him with 5 fish and 2 keepers. Way too many 26 and 27 inch fish going back and the Blues are still ferocious!
With the hard West wind tomorrow we will fish down the beach and shouldn't have a problem. Plenty area's to choose from...But I'm Beggin you, PLEASE listen to what we tell you to do, if you don't understand, myself and the crew will be more than happy to show you what's going on. Capt.Ron

with all these lessons with jigs.. what is the real deal.. Let it hit bottom, reel up slowly about 15 feet and drop back down.. correct? or just lift and bounce the jig..  There are so many ways to do this.. what way is working at the moment.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

What we tell everyone is: Cast out, hit the bottom retreave at a slow steady pace for no more the 15-20 cranks. Drop back down and start over. The retreave naturally is different for every reel depending on the ratio, but a steady return works. I try at least 2 speeds to see what's going to work, the slower 9 out of 10 times is the one that works. That jig's first shot out of the sand is what gets the fishes eye and he'll usually attack, when feeding.
Most BASS will hit within the first 5 cranks when I read them on the bottom.
Bringing it up 20 or more turns will almost gauranty a Bluefish (not that there's anything wrong with that)!!! The bounce or (Striper Swipe) as I call it, does work, and I do it myself many times...but how many guys actually do it proper? Not many from what I've seen....Capt.ron
