Tying my own rigs, Need help!
« on: November 24, 2009, 11:12:37 AM »
So, I recently decided that I don't want to pay $5+ for Hi-Lo rigs and others. I decided to tie my own. Let me know if I'm doing this right.

Hi-Lo:

6/0 Octopus/Baitholder hooks
40-50# test leader.
About a 3' piece, with a swivel on one end (Tied with a Trilene Knot), into a dropper loop, into another dropper loop, into a quick connect for the sinker(Tied With another Trilene Knot). The dropper loop was pushed through the eye of the hook, wrapped around, and around again then pulled tight, then pulled the dropper loop tight keeping about 1/2 inch or so between the actual dropper loop, and the hook. Hard to explain in text, maybe later tonight I'll post a few pictures on how I did this.

^ is what I used to learn to tie knots.

I'd love to, but it's the girlfriends birthday. Not too sure she'd be satisfied with that decision  rgmn

At least they only come once a year!

I'm pretty sure I can snell a hook that isn't a baitholder, as the barbs on the shank are quite a pain in the butt. Maybe I should practice with climbing rope and a gaff  rofla

Would still take the lessons tho. I'm glad to absorb any information from anyone who outfishes my dad. (which may be to be 98% of this board!!) o@

Give him a time out Rod.  ;D

Jeff, anytime you want to stop by my house, I can show you how to snell a hook. Will only take a few minutes and you will have it down perfectly. Not hard to do at all. t^

quick snell.....
1. run line thru eye down shank of hook.
2. take the line above eye of hook, bring it below eye of hook and start wrapping down shank of hook towards tag end about 6 times.
3. take end of main line back up thru eye of hook, pull tight.
4. snug tag end with pliers while tightening main line with fingers.

this knot is great for beginners and takes about 10 seconds to tie up......till u get the hang of the true snell.

Jeffibew, Animatedknots.com has em all
Palamar is used alot and is easy to learn.
The snell is another good one and once learned will be used on every trip.
Good Luck, you'll be fine.

Theres several different kinds of snells out there, some are harder than others.  I like the uni-knot snell becasue it is easy, and it hasnt let me down yet.  Look around online if its not on Animatedknots.com, it is fairly common i think???
