I know the Uni knot is probably the best knot to tie while using braided line, and the albright is an awesome knot for tying mono to braided. Especially if you tie a mono shock leader on your braided line, as the knot passes through the guides with ease. (unless hotrod ties it  rofla)

I never heard of putting electrical tape on your reel for the braided to "bite" into, I just always put some mono backing on, albright, then the braided. Braided is too expensive to spool 300 yards of it on one reel!

And splicing is something that I'll more then likely always stay away from. The only thing I ever spliced was very large braided rope.

Red Phillips knot.  Small and strong wont hang up in the guides, and easy to tie.  Google it,  plenty of real good illustrations out there.

I use improved albright knot,  never had a problem. When struck in the bottom the mono only breaks and the knot never slipped. Scroll down page the first knot is the albright  the second one is the improved albright

I have to say when I first seen the "Albright knot" I didn't think it looked very strong, I think it was Capt. Bob who said he uses it. I tied the knot (was down the basement messing with the fishing gear) I put the learder end in the vice and clamped it down. The Albright did not pull out I was very inpressed and have been using it since  TT^
