DEP Closes New Jersey Shellfish Beds in NY/NJ Harbor
« on: March 18, 2010, 12:52:12 PM »
The following is the text of a March 17, 2010, DEP News Release.  The release can be viewed online at:
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/newsrel/2010/10_0018.htm

The Department of Environmental Protection today temporarily closed to shellfish harvesting about 27,800 acres of Raritan Bay, Sandy Hook Bay, the Navesink River and the Shrewsbury River to protect public health from the adverse water-quality effects of last weekend's nor'easter.

The closure is effective immediately.

In the storm's aftermath, bacteria levels exceed national criteria for safe harvesting. The DEP will continue monitoring water quality to determine when it is safe for harvesting to resume.

There they go again....taking away our rights to eat bacteria loaded shellfish. We should have a choice of what toxic shellfish our families and ourself can eat. More loss of freedom cfzd
All kidding aside hopfully the numbers will clear up in a few days or weeks.Last thing the bay clammers need is less area to work.
