POINT PLEASANT — A Long Beach Township man drowned after the canoe he was traveling in capsized this morning in the Point Pleasant Canal, State Police reported.

Aaron McLaoghlin, 28, and three friends were attempting to paddle their canoe from Treasure Island in the Manasquan River to Maxson Avenue Beach in Point Pleasant when their boat began taking on water near the canal entrance, State Police Detective Brian Polite said.

McLaoghlin's three friends, who were not identified by police, were able to make it to shore safely.

The Coast Guard, State Police and local emergency crews searched for McLaughlin's body throughout most of the day. State Police divers located the body using SONAR late in the afternoon.

not good.. even if you have your life vest on, the water is just too cold to survive this time of year.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

WOW,
I must have just seen these guys in the water right before all that happened.  I live in Pt and was traveling over one of the bridges in the area that give you alot of view of the manasquan.  Really sad...

The trouble with fishing is it was better before you got there, and after you left.

As a canoeist, and being familar with the canal it's one place I wouldn't even attempt to try. I once encountered a 3 foot waterfall in the canal by the old rt. 70 bridge in a 28'boat and that was scary. Prayers go out to the family.
