Great start to Kayak Fishing
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:57:36 AM »
Right after high school I made the commitment to the military. I had no idea I would end up in Iraq twice, but more so end up living in Hawaii for almost three years. I'm not here to advertise, but check out www.aquahunters.com . This is what got me into Kayak Fishing and wanted to share with Jersey. I love the ocean, love fishing, and hope to see some of you members on the water in the future.
Unfortunately I cant paddle 60 miles to fish offshore, but I'll deal with what I can there.

Welcome Aboard PhishPhanatic,

E Komo Mai...

Mahalo for posting.  I guess you were on Oahu.  Fishing in Hawaii is a great secret.   Many know that the fishing is great but do not know the full extent of the abundance they have out there.  I was out there in July and fished the windward side (Waimanalo).  We were catching papio and hoping for Ulua but that is okay we had a blast anyway.  We were using tako legs for bait and Mark White poppers for whipping.  We are hoping to get out there in March of 2011.

As far as kayaking there are a few on here that are into the sport as I am new to the sport (second year), I feel like there is so much to learn.  I am looking forward to getting out and having some fun now that my wife bouight me outriggers to keep me up right.

Where will you be fishing as I live in Toms River and have fished here for over 50 years but like i mentioned this kayak thing is still new to me.

Have you ever been on the Hawaiian Fishing Forum?  I have made a bunch of new friends on there and it keeps me up on the latest fishing results out on the islands.

Happy Catching

Aloha

Paul

Again Welcome Aboard.

I was stationed at Schofield Barracks and lived in Waipahu/Kunia on Oahu. I was PhishPhanatic on the aquahunters forum as well. I'll be staying with family in the Cherry Hill area until I get set up with my wife and all. As far as where I'd want to fish- anywhere possible depending on weather as always. I wish there were pelegics that close to the Jersey shore- seems like noone motherships out like yakkers in Mexico/ Gulf Coast?

In late Summer when the water wearms up dramticaly its posssible to get sailfish one to 4 miles out. Cobia also will come right into the beaches. But there arent enough to target. Its more of a luck thing. You can come down to Brig and fish with me anytime. I have a whole fleet of Hobie demos and only fish at night.

Always wanted to try a hobie- never had the chance. At the moment I have an Ocean Kayak Aegean (two person), definately thinking about a hobie for my single person Yak. Best for fishing in my opinion with hands free peddle. Most of my tackle is for larger game, Penn 750 Ssm reel and Penn 850 Ssm reel.
