Got a call to the Marina last night.(pics added).
« on: April 12, 2010, 08:44:53 AM »
I get a call from AH marina that my boat was sitting low.  They advised me to come check my bilge pump.  I run down there at about 8pm last night.  I go on the boat, the bilge is completely dry.  The boat does sit low, but I do have the entire 200 + gallon fuel tank filled to the brim.  5hrug

I guess it's just the weight of Grady's.  If the bilge is completely dry, I don't think it can be anything else that is weighing the boat down.

200 gallons of fuel weighs around 1700 pounds. You can use a marker to mark outside water line now and compare it when you are half full of fuel after a few trips. At least the marina is looking out for you. t^

dock lines are all good.  Water is below the water line of the boat and up to the side scups.  You can't see the bottom paint when it sits.  No water is coming in through the holes in the transom. Bilge was completely dry.  My guess is, its just the weight of the gas.

That marina is great.  Last season during a Noreaster, one of my dock lines broke.  They tied me up and called me to take a look at it when I get a chance.  They have 24 hour watch at that place.  I really do love it there as their staff is top notch.

200gals of gas only weighs about 1250lb fellas- its lighter than water.

That's why the water goes to the bottom of the fuel tank....  thud

Everyone I know with a Grady (me included) says they are one of the driest boats out there. If I get any water in the bilge it's a rare occasion.

Or your thru hull let go...

Weight of Water Compared to Weight of Gasoline

At a temperature of 20 degrees C or 68 degrees Fahrenheit, a (U.S.) gallon of pure water weighs about 8.34 pounds, whereas a gallon of vehicular gasoline weighs about 6.15 pounds at that temperature.

Still 1200 Lbs of unnecessary weight with a low average of say 1.5 MPG.. he can run 300 miles on that fuel..  I'd wouldn't run more than 100 gallons..  You won't use more than 60 gallons a trip...  600 less Lbs.. you will feal the difference in weight..

I was always told that by keeping the tank filled you have less condensation and water in the fuel.
I also have a 28 grady keep it filled and fish with 5 guys
Yes lots of weight, but doesnt that wait cause the boat to be more stable in a rough sea.I understand your point about the efficiency.
I can also tell you that the grady with all that weight plows through the nasty stuff

Do you also have the water tanks filled?

yes, water tank is full.  How many gallons is that?  I don't know the complete specs of the boat just yet.

I also have the 28 Grady and run full fuel, oil and water but its nice to just pick up and go where ever you want with out worring about how much fuel you have left. Also when that afternoon south wind picks up the grady always cruises right thru at 25 knots.Good luck if its a new boat to you and you will love the Grady Difference Period...
