Had our annual Good Friday make-up trip today on the Mary M. Always a good time with the crew we go with and of course with Capt Sam. Special place too as it's where I met my bride Theresa
"Big John" who runs the trip boated the first keeper today, a nice boxer and from then on we had a good solid pick of tog with some flurries of action with multiple hookups. I boated three keepers early and thought it was "my day" but in the end it was someone more special that had a togaliscious day.
Theresa and Cathy were struggling at first while the guys were putting decent keepers over the rail. Some were using clams, other crabs. Theresa finally managed a short after awhile and Cathy started to have the hot-hand, though most were shorts. She did manage a few by the end of the day.
Some decent keepers from 5-9lbs were already being bled when Theresa set the hook on a nice fish. Was great standing next to her as she pulled in a new personal best at 9.6#. I couldn't get a bite going so skated off to where there seemed more action.
No sooner than my crab hit the bottom I hear "Theresa got another nice fish on" so I head over to see and find T fighting a nicer looking fish. Her XL Rods Snoopy edition was bent down and knew it was better than the previous fish. New personal best at 11.8#. Alright! That's my girl!!!
So of course I head back over next to her and drop down a crab. She tells me both fish bit very softly so pay attention. I get a nudge and nothing else. Check my bait and deadmans fingers are missing. Rebait, dropped back down, and don't really have any life. Now today the best life seemed to be whenever you dropped down into the wreck. Action picked up on the other side of the boat so I jokingly say "I'm gonna move so you can catch a bigger fish" and off I go.
Again, as soon as I drop my crab down I hear alot of commotion. T has another fish on and this one looks even better. Fish took some drag but she managed to get it out of the wreck and now she had a new personal best yet again. This one looked much like my personal best size wise and turned out to be 14.8#.
I knew it was close to 15 and was spot on.
Action died out a bit so Capt Sam made some moves. Had good action on each drop and managed to boat another 5 keepers including one at 8#. Theresa then hooks up into a double-header of boxers. While not a suicidal bite today, we did limit the boat out with some nice fish. Everyone left with their 4 fish worth of fillets and happy to have been fishing on such a beautiful day. Even better to see my better half get new personal bests after personal best, her first double-digit tog, and a teen sized trophy fish
