Hi Salty,

I work it like any bucktail. I bounce it ... I throw it away from the boat and work it back. Lots of ways to skin the cat with it.

I will let some of the others answer more thoroughly.

Ed

Hi Salty,

Like Ed said, Even in the surf I like to bounce it along the bottom on a slow to medium retrieve.

I also like to hang something off the back weather it be a slice of squid curly tail, or a Gulp whatever.  Just something extra to intice them to bite.

Happy Catching

I bounce it off the bottom while drifting, bang up the bottom to wake the fish up, and usually they will hit the second hook.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

I cast it up-current and bounce it back.

I'll keep varying the amount of bouncing until I find what's working. Sometimes its a bounce like flounder fishing, other times its a shaper/harder bounce. I'll also use what I call the "Rhode Island" bounce--odviously I picked this up while fluke fishing in Rhode Island. Basically it is a very rapid flick of the wrist. My son uses this technique by tapping the butt section of his rod. At times it can be deadly.

Most of the fluke will hit as the bucktail is falling so it is important to lower your rod tip as it is falling to keep your line tight.

You have to be quick on the hook set. As SOON as you feel the fluke hit--strike. If you miss it drop back immediately and really work the bucktail as alot of times you can anger the fluke into striking agin.

You might get frustrated when you first start bucktailing but the more you do it the better you become.

One thing I do to my smaller Spros is trim the hair just past the hook. I hate the fact the hair will cover the strip teaser on the hook.  On the larger sizes, using big strips, I'll put a stinger hook on.

Stinger hooks are a nice advantage to have when using long strips. Just make sure you properly hook the strip so that it doesn't bunch up.
