Fishguts Houndfish report
« on: June 18, 2010, 09:16:43 PM »
On my out to the inshore wrecks a short stop in the bay produce some very slow bluefishing with only a handful of fish raised. I did manage to land the first houndfish on the boat this year. It was a beauty at 41" long and jump many times for a great show. A neat fish with some very different nasty teeth.
Houndfish look some what similar to our common gars that frequent they bays during the summer but are a very different species. They both are long and skinny but the houndfish has some different fins, tail and grows much larger.

I caught a fish several years ago in Sept. fishing for little sea bass and blackfish with the kids near the train bridge in the squan. The was about 8" long that must of been a juvenile hound fish. I never figured out what it was until I saw your pic. COOL  clp

Cool Captain! t^

Bigmills, those little guys like to cruise around the docks, piers and bridges.  Tough to catch when they're that size though. ;D

Sweet! Yeah I used to always see them around the docks when id be crabbin, guess its a houndfish!
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

The fish you caught was probally a gar. They are common in our waters and look similar to a houndfish. The also both have plenty of teeth.
