Headed out of Freeport for the local shark tournament on a friend's boat Saturday. Quite the boat it is too, a 36' Yellowfin CC with twin 300 Merc Verados - SWEET.
We headed out about 45 miles from port and found a bunch of birds working and BFT busting around. We tried to troll one up and threw some jigs, but no quick takers and we didn't want to waste too much time.
Finished heading to our spot and got set up on a drift over some good looking bottom. Things started out slow, and then we spotted a tail slapping around one of our floats. We weventually hooked up with what turned out to be a small mako.
A while later we hooked a small blue shark and a couple hours later we hooked some more with a double header. Another small mako was boated on a short line and we had several blue sharks chasing the chum bag. We poked at them with the gaff handle and eventually they went away.
Total for the day was 6 blue sharks, could of had more if we wanted, and the 2 small makos. No fish were kept as we were hoping for the big one and the $$$$, but it was not to be. I heard a 445# Thresher was tops. Blues were not in the tourney. Great day on the water and sore arms the next morning.
