Looking for rod/reel suggestions
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:54:42 PM »
Hello All!

I just started to get into saltwater fishing more actively and felt that it was time to get my own pole (I'm the type of guy who HATES using other people's equipment).

So I am looking to buy a Rod and Reel and need some suggestions. To make it easier I will break it down.

Boat 75%, Surf 25%
Stripers, Fluke, Blues (emphasis on Stripers)
I am open to type of Reels (Lefty friendly preferred)
Combo Under $150

thank you all in advanced  chrz

I have Penn Saltwater and Penn Tidewater combo's. 7 foot rods matched with a Penn spinning reel with 40lb braid. I use those for stripers, fluke, bluefish, sea bass. They are very versatile. You can get them at most b&t shops that sell Penn gear and they cost under $100.00

I have a buddy that just got back into fishing  and he bought one too, he's liking it.

Welp, i spent a few weeks and saved up some spare cash so I now have a budget of $350 for a (preferably baitcasting that's lefty friendly) reel and rod.

All Boat.

fishing for flukes, stripers, and blues mostly. (emphasis on flukes/blues)

I am not against buying multiple rigs given the different types of fish I am aiming for, have a boat + fluke suggestion? a boat + striper? Post it up  ;D

thanks!  chrz

While I don't a suggestion for ya on what to get, I will point out the fact that it would be hard to get one combo that will work for both boat and surf, let alone fluke and stripers.
Different techniques for boat and surf.  And within each of those, different techniques for fluke and stripers.
You might might want to look at spending part of what you have saved on something that will work for what you will do the most of.  Then save a little more and get another combo for your second target.  Sooner or later you'll have a garage full of stuff.

yea i more or less figured this would be the case. I guess that at this point I would primarily be looking for a boat/fluke rig.

I can always pick up something surf later as I've only surfed fish once this season and can only foresee another maybe 1-3 times.
