blue fish?
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:28:15 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm taking a few of my sons friends out fishing this afternoon and I'd like to put them on some bluefish (fun of catching is what I'm thinking).

Any suggestions on where to head? I'm out of Manasquan.

BossRoss,
That is a good question and I wish I could help.  I have not seen them out there like the locals usually say they are there and even the headboats dont seem to be consistently catching them.

I am new to NJ so I wont give you any advice on where to find them, but I have been fishing the SGR with my boys the past few weekends and catching Black Sea Bass and Fluke pretty good.

I have been setting them up with a simple bottom rig and cast netting peanut bunker or frozen squid.  Need about 4-5oz's to stay in contact with the bottom.

Thanks Country,

We've been hitting the SGR and the Axel too, with decent results of BSB and even the occasional Blackfish.

I am going to try and get the kids onto the blues today.

If i find them, I'll let you know.

All reports I have read on blues is the bite is inconsistent at best.  It's their spawning season now so their not as voracious as usual.  People taking trips to the rocks usually report some blues sightings, so you might want to give that area a try.  Worst comes to worst you can always switch over and go for fluke and Sea Bass there if the Blues don't bite.

Catch em up let me know how you do.  I have been eagerly waiting for the Blues to show up had a blast last summer going at night on the head boat for 'em.  I felt glutinous by the end of the night.  Smoked Blues for 2 days straight and they were delicious

Right now there are tons of blues in the Barnagate Bay especially around Good Luck Point of the Toms river.  Like it was said earlier it is spawning season.

So got out yesterday afternoon with my buddy Rick, my son, his son and one of my sons friends. We hit the SGR and caught a bunch of BSB.

We scouted around for blue fish, checked inshore and went as far out as the mud hole, saw no signs of them. Trolled a bit, jigged a bit at some marks, but not a fish.

Fortunately, the BSB didn't disappoint, so the kids caught some fish.

All in all a beautiful day on the water.
