What to do when there is no drift for fluke
« on: July 08, 2007, 05:27:08 PM »
Saturday morning was beautiful but no wind at all.Cant catch fluke if you are not drifting. We went over the rocky areas and started bailing Seabass. No wind and no anchor necessary.Found a good piece and worked it till the wind came up.Resulted in a productive morning and a nice mixed bag

alot of people power drift, by bumping motor in and out of gear, others will say a drift sock.

me personally, i do like you did and go for seabass till drift picks back up. no drift is perfect for seabass, and i think they taste better anyways. ;D

1-Casting out and bounce a bucktail back.

2-Cast out and slowly work a bigfat lively killie back.

Hi RossG,

You got it right ... sea bass in the AM and then fluke in the PM. You can always count on at least a SE wind in the PM to move the boat.

I always have at least a quart of salted clams on board ...

Congrats and good heads up!

i found recently like the past 2 or 3 trips this year that during slack tide, bucktailing workds very well with a teasr. Either casting it out and bouncing it back in, or even just bouncing it on the bottom vertically have produced some nice fish. It is really nice to be cathing (even shorts) when every other boat around you isnt even getting a hit

Hi All,

Fishing is all about adapting. If something isn't working, try something else. If you are in a no drift situation, you can throw bucktails ... that works. For a short time. The boat needs to move eventually.

If I am stubborn and have to fluke during no wind conditions, I do the following:

1. Troll for them. They will bite at 2 mph or less.
2. Go to deeper water ... many times the current and wind may be different than closer to shore.

My personal choice is to fish a wreck until the wind/current start moving the boat.
