Barnegat Ridge North
« on: July 12, 2007, 02:43:42 PM »
Hi All,

I'm new here and fish out of Barnegat Inlet.
We are going out to the Barnegat Ridge North tomorrow.
I have been there a few times in years past and caught mostly blues and some Albacore. We usually chum and troll a little. Can ya'll give me some tips like what type of lures to troll with, can i get fresh chum anywhere? Are butterfish and bunker sufficient for bait?

I am in the Toms River area and have a 21' Parker.

Thanks much,

      Jim

Hi OceanFisher,

Welcome!

Favorite place to troll Clark Spoons (small sizes) for bonito.  Also have some drails. Last year they needed to be under the surface to score. Some Jap feathers in various colors work (the "hot" color changes yearly it seems).

I pull a cedar plug in the first wake and always have a WWB greenmachine setup. Some years it never gets hit. Other times bluefin come a knockin'.

Enjoy ... I have not heard any good reports from there yet but someone has to be first. The water has been dirty and greenish. There are some nice shark holes there as well.

Again ... welcome and we look forward to your post!

Capt. Ed

Hi Oceanfisher,

I forgot to mention that I troll (6-8 knots sometimes faster) until I locate the fish. We then chunk, jig or continue to troll the area.

Do you need more detail?

Hi Oceanfisher,

Fresh info from the folks at Pell's (thanks Tommy!).

There are tons of blues and some Mahi have moved into the Barnegat Ridge area.

You can use the same spread:

1. Short flatline off the transom with a cedar plug (port and starboard)

2. 2-3 wake clark spoons on 8 oz. drails (port and starboard)

3. WWB (use some meat on the end of the grren machine)

Troll between (7-9) for bonita (no good reports of them there). Slow a bit (5-7) for blues.

Make sure to bring out spearing and killies for the Mahi near any lobster pots you see.

I would guess you will do well this weekend with blues; maybe see a Mahi; and hopefully the bluefin and bonita move from the Cigar to the Ridge but the SST and Chlorophyll charts are not looking good right now.

BTW, there was a 28 lb. Mahi weighed in on Monday from that area.

Good luck,

Capt. Ed
