I dont think you will get many keeper porgies from the surf.  They tend to hang around wrecks and such in maybe twenty to upwards of one hundred feet of water.  What you could catch are croakers and kingfish, which are similar in that they are small, tasty bottom feeders.  You want to use bloodworms on small high-low rigs for these guys once the warm water arrives towards the later part of the summer.

To be truthful I can't remember if I caught a porgy off the surf.  Plus I can not remember even seeing one caught off the surf in my area.  Not saying that it has not happened but crokers, kings, blues, stripers and many garbage fish but porgies, nah.

This is what I was getting at... I understand that tiny ones may show up from time to time but i think its a pretty low-percentage endevour to try for them at all from the surf...

You can do well sometimes by Takanasee where the bottom structure comes in very close to the jetty tips.  Best porgy fishing until mid Sept is 400 yards off the beach.

Try fishing the back bays for them. I've caught many on a hi-low rig with sandworms. Never caught a keeper though. The closest I came was about 7 or 8 inches.

I've had some good runs under bridges later in the year. More like september-october. Biggest was probably 10-12inches. This is in old bridge under the Rt35 bridge. I've also pulled several black fish from the jetties there, one was about 4lbs. Again this was a little later, probably november.
