The herring run usually starts around the same time trout season opens, give or take a week or two.

Most productive place I know of is near the Trenton Marine Terminal.

Will you be fishing from a boat or from land?

Fishing for herring is super simple!
NJ laws states that in 2011 you can take 10 herring per man.

The best area on the Delaware is from Bordentown to above Trenton. Use your fish finder to locate the schools, (witch are more times than not on the channel edge drop offs). Then take a sibiki rig (size 8 hooks) and just jig on the bottom till you hook them.

If you are going to use them for bait DO NOT touch them, use a dehooker tool, stripers can be so picky if they are missing scales they won't touch them! To put them on your hook wet hands and be as gentle as possible.  As for time, end of March threw May is best. Hope this helps. chrz

Correct me if it has changed, isn't there a max hook's per line for herring on that stretch of Del. It's been awhile but i remember cutting my rigs down but to what?? Best result's were with gold hook's though.

Max hook is three. Put a gold hook on and thread a gold sequence onto it. Get the sequence from the wife. Drives em nuts (the fish and the wife).  TT^

Thanx for the info. Gonna try to hit the shad run this year for crab bait maybe herring,we'll see. Heard their in the process of putting in a new access ramp on Pa side just south of USX. Won't have to pay NJ fee.

Those old herring flickers work good but the best is the sibiki rigs made by Marathon, (harry's army navy) got them.

Rules state you can only use 3 hook rigs so what I do is take the 6 hook ones and snip 3 of the hooks at the bend. this way you have 3 teasers and 3 with hooks.

Just don't be doing anything your not suppose to be doing, as game warden may see 6 teasers and come check, but as long as 3 hooks are cut your good to go.
