Shad rigs (umbrella)?
« on: September 12, 2007, 09:18:35 PM »
Going to make my own umbrela rigs with some extra 4 wire setups.
Plan on using 80lb test for shad body leaders and 5-6" various colored bulk shad bodies.

What size and style hooks would you use to rig the shad bodies?

most of the shad rigs I buy are pre hooked with leader and swivel.  all you have to do is add them to the umbrella.  You want to make sure they are rigged properly so the body action is at its best.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

Mike,
For my shad rigs I use: Mustad 7/0 3407dt for me they work great I also use 150# leader, this tends to tangle alot less.
I crimp to the swivel and the hook.......No knots.

Thanks, I may have to go that route and get me a crimper.

I may just cheap out and use 100;b and knots in the beginning and do the crimp as a winter project.

Pick up a copy of this week's Fisherman magazine (Sept. 13). Pete Barrett wrote a nice piece about making shad rigs

Did anyone notice some of the shads were rigged with hook out the bottom in the article, has anyone tried this, it would probably increase the hook-up, but tend to snag more, i have always rigged on 80# and used only knots, but i usually hand feed the shad over the already tied up hook and leader. I wonder if they really spin that much.

I have caught on both the hand rigged and the factory rigged.  Didn't seem to make much of a difference.

I found 4" on ebay.

Forgot I already have crimper, so ordering some sleeves, have 6 umbrella hanger setups on way, 100lb test leader, and in processesof ordering hooks, shad bodies and swivels.

I cheaped out and went to AC Moore and got the knitting needle.  Filed the notch in the hook so it fit properly and worked great.  Only cost a buck.   ;D
