It was a pretty good day on the Islander. We ran off to the 30 to 50 mile wrecks yesterday for the first Offshore Cod trip of 2011. It started out bumpy as we had to quarter a head sea for the first 30 miles, but the day just got better and better. It became actually flat by afternoon. The wrecks were ok but the spiny dogfish were brutal. We actually did much better drifting off of the wrecks over the open bottom. There were still spiny dogs but the Cod fish were mixing in better. There were huge schools of sand eels all over out there with whales, dolphin and fish gorging themselves on them. We finished up with about 40 or 50 keeper Cod with several over 20 pounds and a 9 pound Blackfish. It's nice to see the Codfish making a comeback.
We will do a few more of these trips over the next few weeks. If anyone wants to come, the info and pictures are on
www.NJsportfishing.com. We will be switching to Blackfish in Mid April then moving the boats to the Highlands for the Stripers.
Thanks, Captain Mike
