Is this a croaker???
« on: August 13, 2007, 03:39:33 PM »
One day last week me and buddie of mine felt like cathing something so we decided to catch some crabs at seaside heights.  Crabbing was a bust, too many small ones, but we were catching this mysterious fish, or maybe dumb fish, on crab traps.  They were size of our palms, the biggest one probably around 5 inches or so.  After we kept catching them in the trap we decided to take a pic of it and see what kind of fish it was?

Are these croakers? If they are, will the bigger ones be in the same general area we were crabbin?

Its hard to tell by the picture I am sure some one will recognise what it is.

Here is a picture of a croaker though:

They were so small, we should have taken a picture of the biggest one but by the time we decided to take a pic of it only small ones were coming up on the trap.

They say they make good bait 6" or smaller, just hook them through the lips with a 5/0 hook and they will last for quite a while.

Happy Catching

Hard to tell by that picture, but it looks like a croaker to me. Only other fish it could be is a spot. Did you notice a black dot on any of the fish?

Either way, at that size both species are candy for weakfish, stripers, bluefish, and fluke.

Looks like a Spot or what we called Lafayettes.  Used to be plentiful in Barnegat Bay.  Great bait for fluke ;D
