I think you could get away with less anchor line if you have a heavy anchor with a good chunk of chain 9like 15' or so.

I haven't been out there in a while, but I do not recal depths of much more then 120' out there, so with 15' of chain you should be able to get away with 350-400' of anchor line.

It has been many years since I anchored out there, so my #'s may be a bit off if depth is over 120-150' there.

Hi Ross,

You need more line out there not less ...

There are a ton of big boats that cruise by and God forbid your bow gets pulled down because you have too little line.

The center of the Mudhole is about 250 ft. There are some obstructions I fish there in 210 ft. The rule is 7X depth plus freeboard. That is for the worst case seas. For me, I use 5X. Yes, I have over a 1,000 ft. of line. I have them in 250 ft. or 300 ft. lengths. I simply tie them together for the amount I need.

Do you plan to grapple hook or anchor?

If you want to grapple hook, then less line will be used as you do not want to drift off the wreck. If you anchor, I use 750 - 1,000 ft. of line with 50 ft. of chain. The chain prevents chaffing and helps set the anchor. I use 3/8" line for a 21 ft. boat. I use 5/8" for a 42 ft.

They are catching ling and sea bass on the wrecks and bluefish chumming/jigging.

It all depends of which type of anchoring, sea conditions and where in the Mudhole you will fish for the amount of line. 600 ft. is a good start. I bought mine at Lowes or Home Depot (if I remember correctly) in bulk ... I do keep them in a laundry basket. I "tie them" together with shackles.

Good luck,

Ed

On most days you can get away with a 3:1 or 4:1 scope.  If you need much more than that you probably shouldn't be out there in a smaller boat (25' or under).  I agree that 7:1 is a worse case scenario.  But you probably wouldn't be out there anyway if you needed that.  If you have a lot of rocking and rolling, more scope will be needed so you don't break free.

alot has to do with the currents.  On a flat day, you can get away will less than normal.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

we carry 2 coils @ 300' each. one coil goes in the rope box that is stock on the boat and to the end of that we have the second coil tied on and that runs to the back of the boat and hangs on a rocket launche. we usually have me on the bow pulling or dropping anchor, another guy to page the line out from the stern or to recoil when pulling, and the captain to keep the bow pointed into the waves.

pretty smooth operation t^
