Had a great day on the water with my crew today... man its good to fish with good peeps..
following report was written by my Bow Monkey...
Always for a good/needed cause; not just a club/group fund raiser so we always enter. The weigh in is above the Outerbridge Crossing in the Arthur Kill, but like I said. GOOD CAUSE.
Bobber, The Enforcer aka Balki..aka Orlando, LT and I hit the ocean around 6 under much better conditions than last week. A residual swell and not much wind made drifting tough early. We picked 'em here and there. Bobber took the all important Dollar Bill fish. I think Orlando owes a couple peepz money?
?
Initial area wasn't doing it so Bobber dipped into his bag of tricks and put us on a couple other numbers and it turned into silly fishing. Bobber landed a doubleheader of 21" keepers. Orlando got stuck with his bucktail only to have a 23" fish pull him out by the teaser.
When that area slowed down we moved to a proven favorite spot. Lights out again in a small patch so shorter drifts were in order.
We wound up taking 2nd place with a 6.9#; winner was 9.2# Nice Fish
Between 45 and 50 keepers. At the end we were bouncing 4-6 pounders off the gunnels swinging them into the boat.
At least 10 fish over 5#
About 20 of the fish were over 4#
And all fish were thick; spitting up squid and baby ling. And they fought GREAT.
Things I learned today:
1. The crew of the Kalle fish hard. I was getting tired watching them at one point when we were by each other.
2. The Harnell rod I got this winter at a fishing flea market for $45 is a GEM. It handled the fish with no problem and I could feel every head shake on every fish. If I missed a bite, I could feel that the strip bait was twisted. Very Nice!
3. This week's azz is Osprey. During the latter bite of the day they were fishing by us. We were flipping fish after fish into the boat and they were watching. They literally CIRCLED us twice, the captain pushing his MOB button the entire time. When asked, they replied "Well, how did YOU get that spot?" UHHHH HELLO..........fish an area, look at your fish finder, notice changes in depth and bottom structure, actually fish it a couple time. Schmucks.
4. Skinny guys eat a lot
5. The Enforcer is welcome in the bow anytime.
6. 32 big fluke make a LOT of full bags of fillets.
7. I don't miss launching out of Keyport or Sayreville, at all.
8. It takes a lot of fish to fill the "coffin" (fish cooler) but it can be done.
9. Moving the cutting table at A.H. Marina was done without much thought.
10. Fishing all day long on 3 hours isn't bad. Sitting on the bow in the hot sun is ok. Listening to LT's gangster wannabe rap station for the top 20 for two hours is TORTURE! I was GLAD to listen to the Spanish station after that.
