« on: June 26, 2011, 12:36:20 PM »
what should my drags be set at in strike position for inshore tunas?

gear i have

2 tld's, a 20 and 25 both lever drag (or was it a 25 and a 30?)
2 penn 975's, 1 lever drag, 1 star drag

dont wanna rip the hooks out being to heavy, and dont want'em to just have free run either, whats the sweet spot?

So a 975 is good for say a 50lb stiper, but not a 50 lb tuner? Granted 1 runs like a bullet,,, but 50 is 50

The TLD's will be fine but you want to leave the 975's at home they will not hold up to tuna and I don't think the make enough drag.Setting you drag is 1/3 your line size.

if i leave the 975's at home, that will drop me down to 2 rods to troll. the 20 and 25, i don't have anything else bigger.

looking up on penns sight the 975 lever drags have 10lbs of drag, 12lbs on the star drag model

with that said, i don't think i have a choice but to bring the 975's and hope they don't get a monster on'em. if something hooks up and i cant motor fight it, i'll have to cut it off, and make sure i got spare braid with me incase i get spooled.

dont want to go out with a 2rod spread thats for sure and moneys kinda tight for this trip as i'm already trying to save up for a  jigging setup,, unless i spend the cash on another tld25, and just have to use that for jigs as a get by till i can straighten things out

hmm,, looking on shimanos web sight, the tld 20 is 23lbs drag, while the 25 is 22lbs drag,

yup, think i will get another tld25 troll rod, and just get by using it for jigging

Where do you fish out of?  I sold my boat last year, but still have all my tuna gear.  You have the boat, I have the gear, maybe we can work something out.  Steve

Gregg, if you can't hook up with Greatwhitwhunter I can lend you a couple of my outfits. They are stand up Penn rods with TLD25 lever drags. Just let me know and Rod can pick them up for you.
