Montauk bassin' 10-8-11
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:04:55 PM »
A few buddies and I packed up the truck and headed out around 10pm.  About 4 hours later we arrived at the lighthouse in Montauk, NY to amazingly clear skies.  We suited up and made our way down to the water.  We were all newbies to the area, so fishing in the dark was a little on the crazy side with all the rocks on the bottom.  We decided to wait until the lights turned on a bit, so we took a quick nap in the truck.  As soon as it started to brighten up, we headed back down to the water.  By this time, there was already a good crowd of surfcasters staking their claims on most of the good fishable rocks and shoreline.  I managed to squeeze into a spot, and as soon as the sun crested the horizon the fun started.  All day long, there were bass busting water like crazy, going in and out of reach of all the surfcasters around.  The boat guys were runnin' and gunnin' all day from pod to pod crushing bass.  Seemed like most guys on the boats were doing well on the fly rods.  I landed 4 bass up to 15lbs for the day, and hooked into a bunch more that came unbuttoned.  There was so much bait up there it wasn't even funny, so it made the fish a little picky at times.
It was a great day all around.  As my first trip to Montauk, it was a trip to remember for sure! Even if I didn't wet a line, it still would have been worth the trip to see those stripers breaking water like that all day. Definitely a sight to see! I highly recommend making at least one trip out there if you haven't been there before. For the 5 of us, I'd say we landed around 20+ bass for the day. Walking those rocky bottoms, are so much different than sandy floor Jersey fishing. I had a few good falls here and there and I can feel it today.  I kept only one bass, which we grilled up in the parking lot for lunch.  All other bass were released.  Can't wait to get back there.

At one point, I had em busting like that about 3 feet in front of me, while I was perched up on a rock.  Simply awesome.  I gotta get back.

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

Great trip! Thanks for the pics.

IMO Montauk is the best fishing antywhere. Hands down.

Haven't been out there in a couple of years.
