As long as there is a paycheck to collect, our fisheries will always be on the verge of collapse
eamakatu: Sir, you have a very good understanding of how both NOAA and our, or better put NOAA's, Gulf Council works. IFQ's brought the $$$ factor into TAC. Shares/separation will bring the money factor into the lives of the everyday fisherman. I can see it now...NOAA's catch share program hits the recreational anglers; we must now pay dearly for "Shares" to catch what is, or once was, our fish, our heritage. No Shares = NO FISHING!
But there is a bright side. If we allow NOAA, backed by billions of $$$ from radical organizations such as EDF, PEW, and Walmart's WALTON FOUNDATION, etc., to stuff Shares down our throats, all of a sudden, miraculously, our fisheries will no longer be in danger. A recovery brought about by greed, not science. The pay backs from selling us back our own fish is predicted to be in the billions. Our fisheries are no longer, "on the verge of collapse!" A, "Paycheck," a very health paycheck, is now assured for all connected to the Catch Shares Program. " We are going to lay off 200 employees who are no longer needed," will, at our expense, never become a reality. Bob Harbison
