Striped Bass Fishing, 8/9. Pool Fish!
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:13:30 AM »
All morning at work all I could think about was catching some fish.  So I made the decision to take a party boat from AH (Angler) for some night fishing.  The weather wasnt too promising but I said hell with it...

Got off of work at 4:30 and barely made it to the dock before she left around 6:25, damn that Garden state parkway!

When I got on the boat I noticed people were putting on diamond jigs? I thought I had gotten on Striped bass boat.  Turns out they dont striped bass fish till like 8 pm, blue fish was on the menu till darkness hit.  People were catching blues left and right, but me.  I had one hit, a hard one, but the rod went limp in a split second. Lost jig.

8 pm rolled around, the Captain said we can't go to the places he wants to because the seas were too rough.  We ended up drifting all night along the north beach, literally like 50-100 yards off of it I think, water depth was at most 25 feet.

We were fishing with sandworms and first two keeper fish in the boat were Fluke(by same guy)!!! Those things eat anything I guess!!

On 2nd or 3rd drift I finally had a fish on, it was a good one.  It took me from Stern of the boat to middle part of the boat on my light gear!! I had bought an avet reel last week but I can't use it yet!!!( a long story)
Well this fish turned out to be a pool winner, which was my first pool fish ever...although it was not for much money since only there were like 15 people on the boat, it felt good fishing for free ;D

By end of the night I ended up catching 6 striped bass, 1 keeper and 5 shorts.  Good action all night.

As usual, after the trip I called couple of my buddies to come over and enjoy the fish with me.  Eventhough it was like midnight they came over, since one of them is a master cook it works out!!!

Yeah they do put up a good fight even the short ones.  When I got on the boat and saw other people's rod and reel I thought I'd have no chance landing fish with my set up, but I didnt really feel like fishing with a rented pole so I said whatever.

One short I had, I thought it was even bigger than the keeper.  He hit it and took a b-line away from the boat, drag screamin and I yelled out "oooooooo this is a nice one!!!"  well he turned out to be just 1 inch or so short and I was embarrased ;D

Joe I had no idea you would go on party boats!! haha, the stripers are still in so take me striper fishing ;D!!! and thanks for lookin into the reel thing for me..

Nice fish!  I didn't even realize there are boats targeting stripers right now.  Used to be they only fished for them in the spring and fall.  Good to know. t^

Congrats on the pool !!

Sandworms have taken some nice quality fluke for me in the past-especially when fished on a 3x3 rig or a floating jig head while weakfishing.

The night time worming of stripers this year and last has for the most part been under the radar. I know captains (both charter & party boat) that catch 100+ bass (granted 95% short) a trip. Using the pproper tackle they're a bunch of fun to catch.
