Nice catch.
A week ago snappers were not producing at the Sea Girt Reef.
My preferred rig for fishing snappers is such; 12" piece of #30 leader material with a high quality barrel swivel at one end & a 4/0 Gamakatsu octopus hook snelled to the other. On my main line I'll place a plastic sleeve fish finder before tie the other end of the barrel swivel to my main line.
The reason why I use a short leader is because with a longer leader you give the snapper a greater chance of swimming away from the jaws of Mr. Fluke.
I'll also fish a snapper the the reel in freespool, keeping my thumb on the spool. Once I feel the pick up, I'll drop back soem line, place the reel in gear, I'll give it another second or two for the fluke to get the biat in it's motuh and then drive home the steel
