Sputter outs
« on: July 13, 2007, 07:42:53 PM »
Engine starts fine from cold. Idles fine.
Runs strong. Starts warm in 1 crank EXCPET when fluking (drifting) maybe 3rd or 4th time qwhen firing up to move or take drift over, she will star fine, then sputter out when I give her some gas.

Crank right up, give her gas and stall out.

4th or 5th time, starts up, everything fine.

This is ONLY issue with my engine (knock on wood).

Been happening since i got boat.

Installed racor last week and it isperfect.

Today, I replaced the fuel filter inside the engine (little cone shaped filter-did have some gritty looking sand like stuff in it, but not terrrible.

engine is Johnson 175 2003.

Could this be vapor lock?

i would assume vapor lock would do it all the time. possibly a small air leak in the lines somewhere, coil pack, could be 1 of a million things.

if your able to, run off a portable tank and see if it goes away. and take it from there.

Still have more to replace but it doesn't happen as often and my gas bulb (no pun guys ) gets hard when i squeeze it ! ;D

Doesn't happen when running. Only from the occasional warm start.

No problem when docking.

Yea mine would if i go to neutral like a low idle and die so its either the idle is low or  vapor lock but it will only do it  if its warm!... I think its the vapor  lock myself cause ill hit the bulb and it works fine  t^

First!... This is a fuel issue..

I think you are losing prime while at rest..

Next time it happens, check to see if your primer bulb is still hard, if not.  you are getting air or the check valve is bad in the bulb..  I say the bulb check valve.

or you could be getting air in around the electric prime assembly.

I own the 1993 115 of your motor and rebuilt mine.  I own every manual made for these motors ;D  and remember them like the back of my hand..

With that year engine you should look into the selco 1992-01 repair manual..

water made it to the engine from the separator, sounds like something I had last year.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

Haven't seen any water in seprator yet.

Gas in the clear bowl looks decent to me (like a golden color?)

Replaced bulb with OEM Johnson on Saturday and no problem Sat night, but did have the problem again yesterday.

When I prime the bulb, it does not get hard. My racor is higher then the engine hose connect. COuld that have something to do with bulb not getting hard.

The problem tho, has been there since day 1 and has nothing to do with racor.

Otherwise, she is running fine  5hrug

I have the stainless on all visible ones outside of engine and bilge.

I will take cowling off and look and also look at the ones on the oil injection.

Thanks.
