What are the biggest seas you guys have been in, in your boats?

Hi NJAdam,

Offshore over 15 ft. ... manageable but not pleasant.

The real thing to consider is not just the height of the seas, but the wave period and the "makeup" of the wave (i.e. gentle rollers or chopped up tops).

You can have tremendously large seas with no chop on top that are spread out that any boat can handle.

But then you can have high seas that are tight (and add chop on top). Then it gets serious.

I hope I didn't confuse the situation but it is more than pure height to me ...

Wave formation/makeup and wave period can make 3 ft. seas more hazardous than 10 ft. long period swells.

Nothing I hate more than seas over 3' with a short wave period where they seem to stack up on you.

To answer your question, the biggest seas I fished in where out in Montauk anchored upo and chunking bass on Great Eastern Reef. Not sure how high the seas where but we had a 50" sportfisher anchored about 20-30 yards off out port. When we went into the trough of a wave you couldn't even see the top of it's tuna tower or outriggers. Fortunately the wave period was very long.

7'-8' with the occasional rouge 10'.

i'm one of those sick pups that LOVE big seas. only 2 types of seas bother me and thats when the waves are stacked up as mentioned in previos posts above and the other is a following sea. going submarine scares me.

In my present ride 10-12 ftrs, but like Capt Ed said it depends on the wave makeup as to what you can handle
