Left the dock at 8am with Lou, Maurice, Johnny5, Lenny and George aboard. Had info from several people on the dock that there was a lot of life at the Sea Girt reef. Cleared Shark River inlet and tried a drift near the bell buoy hoping to catch fluke leaving the inlet. Nothing happening. We were going to give the Sea Girt reef a shot but saw a zillion boats already there. Wanting no parts of that we headed north.
Fished our lump three miles off of the Red Church. Very slow, little wind and not much of a drift. Did catch some shorts and two keepers. Made several drifts with limited success. Moved south to a lump off of Asbury Park. No action at all there. Made a final move to a spot off of Ocean Grove in sixty five feet of water. Started getting an east wind at about 5-10 MPH giving us a fair drift. Picked up some keepers on each of several drifts. Finished the day with 14 keeper fluke and 1 seabass. A good day dispite a slow start. Also had our share of skates due to the slow drift.
Water temp was 70-72 degrees and the water was a bit on the dirty side.
Biggest fluke was 23 1/2 inches. Caught by Lou on squid strip and fresh peanut bunker.
