Lettering
« on: April 23, 2012, 01:15:24 PM »
Well I finally did it, I'm gonna letter the boat right. It said 'Taken For Granite' on it for two seasons now and it's time to put BAITWASTER on it. West marine's custom lettering's not that cheap either!
As expexted when I removed the old lettering it was protected from the elements and now you can still see it. Does anybody know of any tricks or have any sugestions other than compounding?

Second Rod's suggestion.  As for the removal, very very light wetsand where the letters were.  Cutting polish, stepped up to light polish followed by wax of the entire hull.
The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the sea.

@ Rod I would be happy to give him the work Rod, but I already ordered the letters and hopefully when I take the boat down that way it's going in the water!!! That and I'm so lazy anymore that even applying poli glow wore me out! hhppy

I speak from experience.  I took the old lettering off last year and goof off'ed the hell out of the residue.  Looked like I got it all until I pulled the boat for the winter and sure enough it was all there.  This year I was doing the polish and wax anyway, so the wetsanding was just a small added step, but it worked for sure.

Thanks Andy. Was thinking along those lines, guess I was hoping that someone would say something like "just take a leak on it" that works great. No easy way I'm sure. Nothing looks worse than new lettering over faded out old lettering right? Kinda like when someone buys an old police car and just takes the graphics off and writes Sam's driving school" right over top!! lol. Just looks really bad!

I was shocked to be honest.  I really thought I got it dead clean last spring.  I scrubbed and scrubbed forever.  I pulled the boat and as the hull dried sure enough I could see "Still Running" completely clear under my Andy's Delight.

To be honest the sanding is probably easier than using goof off, it's the polishing and waxing that you'll have to do to the entire hull afterwards that'll make you cry.

You also have to make sure you get all the poliglow off before applying decals :P,,  commercial floorwax remover works

Thanks guy's. I think after wet sanding I can just apply the decals, wipe clean and poli glow over and it should be good for now. Now I know how she feels..It sucks dealing with OLD crap!
