Inshore Tuna Fishing
« on: April 26, 2012, 11:16:24 AM »
I have a 24' Scout with a single engine on it. It has the capability to go out to the Hudson Canyon but I don't want to out that far because it is only a single engine. However I am looking for inshore locations for blue fin. I have tried the Barnegat Ridge and have only found false albacore and Bonita there. Any suggestions on where else i might try for blue fin or mahi?

Many areas in the mud hole vicinity. Some good wrecks and bottom contours out there. A well known, heavily fished area is monster ledge, about a 20-25 or so mile ride from Shark River inlet. That is usually a good jump off spot.

Robinson:

I am in the same boat. I have a 23' walkaround with not a ton of fuel so I would never dram of going too far but, I want to take a look at the mudhole wreck and the ridges. I think they're managable for me. I fish out of Manasquan so, maybe we could buddy boat this year for a little comfort/safety.

Below is a thread I posted which might have some of the answers you're looking for.

Yeah it seems like after you reach the barnegat ridge everything else is about 15 miles further

Robinson1921, Where do you sail out of? I'm out of Shark river I try to fish inshore as much as we can. The Mudhole area is good as soon as the water warms up a little more we will be shark fishing. I try to leave the radio on 65 but sometimes the other guys turn it down. The other is on 16 and most of the time turned up. what is the name of your boat? Call any time and as the season gets here I will try to post when and where I will be. That way we can all feel a little better out there. Boat Name:Think Big My name: George

I've never caught a brown. We lost a nice mako 2 years ago at the ledge. A few years before that we have a 125 mako at the Lillian. The one guy I fish with has been sharking for a long time. He has caught plenty at the oil wreck and you can see the highlands from there. Last year we had a 218 thresher just north of the mako hotel that's about 40 miles out of shark river.

If you think the mud hole is close for shark, wait till the bunker come in full force. You will have the opportunity to hook up with a 5,6,7 foot thresher shark less than a mile off the beach. Great site to see them free jumping out of the middle of a bunker school.  t^

Sounds like you have read a copy of The Shark Trollers Bible. It's part of my library, as well as some other great shark reads from our East Coast.Guys.

Yes, I'm still doing it, I'm addicted. I have read about guys in Paupa New Guinea catching them single handed in dugout canoes. I'm going to try it alone myself, Pop A New Guinness style in a fiberglass craft.
