07/13 Point Pleasant NJ
« on: July 15, 2012, 10:21:44 AM »
Hi,
I am new to the forums, but just discovered this site a few weeks ago and have been reading the fishing reports every day.

Anyhow, on to my little detailed report of our fluke/sea bass fishing trip.

Me and a few of my family members scheduled a charter out of Point Pleasant NJ on 07/13. We usually fish out of Sea Isle City/ Cape May, but this specific charter came recommended by one of our family members. After much anticipation Friday finally arrived, and we headed to Point Pleasant filled with excitement (you know, that early morning we're about to catch some fish excitement!).

We finally arrived at our destination, and loaded our gear onto the boat, and headed through the back bays and towards the ocean. The weather turned out to be beautiful. The humidity wasn't too bad, and the partly sunny sky made sure we only caught an ideal amount of sun.

I planned a bunch before the trip, read a few books and a bunch of online information (including fishing reports here), and decided to settle on a hi-low teaser setup with a 4 oz. Spro bucktail, with Gulp as bait. The Gulp selection I chose were 2 buckets of 3" Shrimp in new penny and white, 1 bucket of 4" white grubs, and 1 small pack of the 6" grubs in white.

Upon getting to our first fishing "stop", I dropped in my rig, and began to bounce it off the bottom. I am quite new to bucktailing, so it seemed kind of awkward at first (I am used to conventional fluke rigs). But after a few minutes I got my up and down motion to what I thought was ideal, and before long I landed the first fluke. Unfortunately it was only a 16" or so, and come to find out, this is how most of the day went. We netted probably about 50 short fluke, a couple of skates, sea robins, and a few sea bass. In the end, we only netted 3 keeper sea bass, and 2 fluke.

Regardless of our catch it was a fun day all in all. I did have my new camcorder with me, and I did manage to catch some video. However, as I kept pausing to record, I would leave my line idle and it would snag of course (we were fishing mostly wrecks/structure). After I lost a few rigs, I decided to hang up the camcorder and concentrate on fishing. I have embedded the video at the bottom of this thread, so hopefully you all enjoy that.

Also, as for the bait, all of our baits seemed to work well. From spearing to peanut bunker, to even the strips of squid and Gulp, they all caught fish. Out of the Gulp, and to my surprise, the 3" shrimp in new penny worked the best. I tried the 6" grub, but honestly, I liked the ease of use of the 4" better.

I think I covered about everything...

Cheers,
K

Thanks. Glad you all like the video. The family is headed down Sea Isle next week, and there should be fishing trips abound! So stay tuned for more video. (Hopefully this time we'll catch some big ones.)

Also, if anyone can recommend charters out of Sea Isle City or Cape may, let me know.
