new to jetty and site
« on: September 01, 2012, 10:36:48 AM »
Hey all,
New to saltwater fishing--freshwater has always been my preference.  I want to take on saltwater now.  I would predominantly be throwing plugs from the jetty as my buddies don't use bait very often.  I'v decided on the Shimano Spheros 8000 and StC Mojo surf.  Held the 9' stick in the store yesterday and it felt good to me--light and maneuverable like the freshwater poles I'm used to.  The 10' felt huge to me for plugging, but having never fished saltwater, I don't know what I'll need out there this fall.  Any feedback or experiences with a 9' vs. 10' for plugging are greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

10' is to cumbersome for jetties in my opinion.  Use whatever you are comfortable with. My plugging sticks are all between 8 and 9'.

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

I'm looking at buying a 9' myself. Keep in mind what types of baits you will be throwing. One rod will sling metal like a champ but put a bomber on there and  rgmn.
With all that said, your rod selection is a great start and something that will probably always stay in your collection.

My preference would be a 5000 reel for that rod, 8000 is going to weigh you down some.

Welcome Aboard.  Definitely slap the reel on the rod before you pull the trigger to double check the balance, but I think your combo with the 9' sounds like a winner.  I have a spheros 8000FB matched up with a 7' fenwick.  The reel is pretty functional but not especially durable... make sure you keep 'er clean and keep the sand and salt water out!

wa 8' or 9' should suit you just fine for jetty fishing.  Good luck!

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
