8/24 - Team Sea Stooges Monster Ledge
« on: August 24, 2012, 07:26:43 PM »
Well, now I can say I did it - I fished for the exotics from my boat! The Sea Stooges crew today consisted of myself, BigAl and his friend Josh. We met at the boat at 0400 and were well underway by 0420. We stuck with the original plan of heading North to The Farm and begining our troll there and working South. From the Farms we made our way to the mud wrecks working along the pots. We had some chicks and small bait marks with an occasional deep fish marked but nothing happening. We made a 360 and did the loop again then pressed south. We trolled all the way to Monster Ledge.

At the ledge the talk on the radio was of mahi and no Charlie anywher (go figure it was 77 degrees). More life was present, pods of dolphins. 1 came to our starboard and gave a look as we were trolling and off it went. It was close enough we could have patted it on the head. More tuna chicks and a shark. Made our way around the pots and managed a chicken mahi which fell on the swim platform and away it went. We threw some killies/bucktails at the pots but found no one home. After giving it our *ll" there we swung by Little Italy and there was no life. Stopped at the SGR on the way in and boated a few nice CB's for the box.

Limped in on fumes and filled her up. I got my wish - I now know what size tank is in the boat. Only 50gal!! The dude who sold it to me lied! He said he changed it and it was 60 or 65. Anyway I played it safe and bought some with us that we didn't have to touch.

The seas were great! Overall it was a 76 mile trip. At least I now know the boats limits when it comes to distance. We all had a great time and a bunch of laughs. I can wait till Charlie comes back and a little closer. Well, it'll be an early night - fluking in the am!

"Sea Stooges" is a good name for a boat.

Some action and 76 miles on 50 gals. Good fuel mileage. TT^

Nice write up Fred. t^ Hes a top notch guy as most of us know, realy worked hard to try and find the fish. Water was bluer than Ive ever seen  and the boatside dolphin was an awsome touch. Thanks again fpr the call.  Well give it another shot when the degrees go down.

Nice report and glad it was a safe trip Fred.
Fifty gallons is not much fuel on a trip like that considering a boat could hit foul weather on the return trip.Friend of mine has a Sea Ray and only has a forty gallon tank. :headscra: Don't understand that at all.
Glad the trip went well.

Believe me, I didn't want to make the trip on 50 gallons. I was told when I bought the boat that the original 86 gallon tank had been replace with a 60 0r 65 tank. I took extra fuel since I didn't know and I thought I was having weird reading with my fuel gauge. With the great weather and sea conditions I had to take the chance.

It was a tremendous learning experience for both fishing and boating.
