This fishing report is for early September 2nd, 2012 for the charter boat “Happy Day Today”
Fishing out of Fort Lauderdale with Al Brake, his son Ethan, wife and friends.
We left the dock at 7:45am and headed offshore Fort Lauderdale inlet. The sea conditions were right for Mahi and Wahoo especially with the debris in the water. There was a strong North current in 400 feet of water, rip currents, flying fish and floating debris. Al wanted to target some edible fish and this certainly was the right day for Mahi. We started trolling in 400 feet of water and working a bit offshore to 450 feet and back in to 375 feet of water. Within the first half hour of fishing, we located a half submerged 5 gallon bucket. The first pass we got connected with a double header Mahi. Both fish weighing around 7 pounds and in the box, and the next two passes, the same result, double headers. By 9am, we had 6 decent Mahi in the box and Al’s family was certainly happy.
We continued trolling for another hour and produced another 4 Mahi and a Wahoo which were caught just along side a floating board. The Wahoo was on the smaller side, but still worth keeping. The last hour of the trip and AL and family happy with the catch asked to target a Sailfish and we were happy to do so, we headed in a little shallower to 175 feet of water, we set up in front of a couple wrecks which the current would bring us over, and the hour of kite fishing for Sails and no bites.
We were fortunate to have this nice catch as well as another 3 boats in the fleet which also found floating debris catching Mahi with some mixed in Wahoo.
The storm and hurricane Isaac was the ultimate result of the action. The floating debris was all coming from the South and heading North up the Gulf Stream. I would anticipate and hope this will last another couple days the floating debris and the bite. We like to have a nice catch, but do not want to hammer the population too hard and with our catch it ended up to be a great charter.
