In a letter to Governor Chris Christie dated November 16, 2012 Rebecca Blank, Acting Secretary of Commerce and Deputy Secretary of Commerce, announced that under sections of both the Interjurisdictional Fisheries Act and Magnuson-Stevens Fishery and Conservation Management Act, disasters have occurred due to a natural disaster for New Jersey and New York.
She states, "We will work with you and your communities to evaluate Sandy's short-term and long-term impacts on your states commercial and recreational fisheries, and fishing and processing infrastructure. We will use these evaluations to assess the need for fishery disaster assistance that cannot be met through other existing federal relief programs."
The letter also contains specifics as to how the federal government will work with NJ and NY to provide coastal communities and the fishing industry with effective recovery programs.
NJOA will continue to provide fishery related updates and make available damage assessment information to its members and readers of our Action Alerts."

1. As a reminder, if you can't fish because your favorite access point, marina, or dock is gone because of Hurricane Sandy, Chris Zeman, New Jersey's representative to the Mid-Atlantic Marine Fishery Council, would like specifics.
Mr. Zeman is writing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to get federal disaster aid for the recreational fishing industry and is looking for the help of anglers.
He is looking for recreational anglers to provide some details as to where specific infrastructure damage has occurred. The reports should be one to two paragraphs, include location and a photo.
E-mail your reports to Chris Zeman, chrisze@optonline.net. Place "Sandy's fishing-related damage" in the subject line and include your name and town.
