I just received this release from Tom Fote of the JCAA, we are going down fast

We are going down from 17.1 to 15.77 in summer flounder and new all
time low. ASMFC and MAFMC voted for  a quota of 15.77 million pounds
for 2008 and a 30% reduction in Scup quota. This did not make NMFS
happy since they want to reduce the quota to 12.90 million
pounds.  They was no economic study done on the impacts of this cuts
but they have never done an economic study on the effect of
regulations on the recreational sector. I always amazes me how
congress lets them ignore this standard. The also reduce the scup
quota by 30%. I just got home from Long Island and heading out the
door for the meeting in Shark River on the Coast Guard. I will have
more details tomorrow.

Sincerely
Tom Fote

Hi Capt. Bob,

These numbers from ASMFC and MAFMC are still at odds with the 11.64-12.90 million number NMFS scientists have proposed.

With the history of ASMFC and MAFMC being bullied into the NMFS numbers, we probably will have a long Winter of lobbying again to save the season.

This cycle will never end until they start doing science instead of guess-work at NOAA.

The Porgy (Scup) slash of 30% is beyond reason ...

Thanks,

Capt. Ed

I for one, think we have to fight harder. Instead of these meetings on weeknights 50 miles away making it all most impossible for working people to attend, I suggest having our own meetings on Saturday evenings, locally. We could have several of these during the fall, inviting the JCAA, RFA, ASMF, MAFC, the politicians, and the media. These people don't have to show, but we do, we have to show strength, and unity. WE have to show these jokers we vote, and we aren't happy. Since the end of fluke season on Monday, my business has dropped about 80%, hopefully it will pick back up when the striper's start showing, but until then ???.
There is no reason for them to arbitrarily lower these limits. How many recreational guys have ever been asked what their fluke catch was, by an official person, and how often. This is all BS, they are saying we had 45% of our allotment caught by the end of June. Next year they want to give us July and August to fish. WE HAVE TO FIGHT, WE CANNOT LET THESE BASTARDS WIN.

Duffman,
They aren't going to say anything other than the reduced allotment, until the last minute. They don't want you to have time to fight it. If we would have started fighting the size and season limits when they told us what and when, we would have lost the summer arguing. We have to start now, and not back down.

Haha , Mikey I like the idea of that. They want to screw us over, then we mine as well screw them over and not get caught. That is BS, all these commercial guys can drag nets and what not, and we cant keep some fluke. Get Serious. I just wonder what the size limit will be and the bag limit. I think size limit will decrease and bag will decrease also.  We will see.  5hrug

The meeting in Belmar is Sept 17th at 7:30 pm, at the Taylor Pavillion. Located off Parkway exit 98 at 5th and Ocean Avenues across from Silver Lake.
How many people are going to attend this meeting on a Monday after work. Just the folks that live in Belmar.

Luna Sea, and Fishon42,  guys like you seem to be part of the problem, false bottoms, turn into poachers, thats not the answer. Stand up and fight.

Whiskers,
Luna and fishon were just talking tongue in cheek.  They would not do what they said, but were just indicating that this is what things are coming to with all of the irrational rules and regs.

I do understand your point though.

I will be at the meeting on Monday.  I am from the Trenton area and about 40 minutes away.

Let's hope for a large turn out.

Hopefully it was tongue in cheek, thanks for the pointer. I don't know either of those guys, and if I reacted prematurely my apologizes. A little sensitive watching my business drop off because of these ridiculous rules.

Hi All,

Hi Whiskers,  I understand your frustration but you have to get to know these guys and learn that sometimes our frustration turns into sarcasm as in this case.

I know for me at least, Saturday's are out I am committed in a different direction till the end of November and can't get out of it.  So I will try to make Mondays meeting at 7:30 in Belmar.  If not I will continue to do what I can from here.

Just because some of us can't make the meetings doesn't mean we are not committed to the cause.  A lot of us are writing letters, sending emails and talking it up every chance we can.

Happy Catching

Whoooooah Whiskers....Hang on a minute. The comments on the false bottom cooler was a JOKE !!!!  And I'm the one who posted the comment so please don't attack or blame anyone else in this forum. The comment you made about Luna and fishon was not necessary. Too many people get there panties in a bunch over stupid stuff. There's more important things to worry about in life. And just to let everyone know, If there's ever a problem with something I personally post just handle it like an adult and get in touch with me and we can straighten everything out between us. No need to involve anyone else. Whiskers, your comments show you have a passion for fishing and I admire that...but the way you handled things was in my opinion not the proper way.

Whiskers:  I did not see the above reply before I typed my previous post. You are a true gentleman in every sense for apologizing. As far as I am concerned this issue is over and life moves on. I sincerely hope you feel the same way.
