Soda Blasting Alternative
« on: January 09, 2013, 05:53:20 PM »
I decided to get a hard, wire attachment for my Makita rotary sander.  I did a small area today and it worked great.  With $1,000.00 to soda blast, this attachment cost me $5.00  It will take a while, but I do have all winter to work on it.

Anyone with any pros or cons for this method?

Possible damage to gel coat.   Inhaling all the toxic dust in your mouth, eyes, nose.   Wrenching your back..

I did it a few years ago with an orbital sander and vowed never to do it again.  I'd rather work a couple days of overtime to pay for it..

The gel coat is actually what keeps you a float, Fiber glass by itself is not 100% water proof there are tiny holes that the resin wont fill, hence the gel coat. If you chip or gouge it I would definitely hit it with marintex or gel or something before the barrier coat, and as hunter said the stuff is toxic, its filled with copper and lead and VOCs
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
