radio transmissions that are never good to hear
« on: August 05, 2007, 07:39:38 PM »
Heard three separate radio radio transmissions today that are never good to hear.

One was about an overturned boat in the Beach Haven Inlet.  Did not hear any updates on this one.  Said appeared to be two outboard sticking out of the water.  Rod, anything???

The second was a boat taking on water near Manasquan.  Believes to have been safely brought  to port.  Capt Ed, anything???

The third was the most tragic.  Man overboard call.  Came from what sounded like a foreign fishing boat, probably 200 feet or so long.  Position given would have put it somewhere south of Sandy Hook area.  Don't know how many miles at sea.  CG went out with a helo and NYPD was on scene with one of their boats.  Transmission from CG all day...if seen, call CG, assist if possible.  Too many hours later, still not found.  As of this writing, still not found.  Water temp in 70s so survival is possible.  Hopefully he will be found alive.  The CG chopper did find the helmet the crewman was wearing.  Reported to be wearing orange jumpsuit and yellow PFD.

what channel do you monitor while on the water...
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

I am on channel 10 and 16.  My radio, as most, allows me to monitor one channel and if any transmissions come across 16 it will automatically switch to 16.  The above broadcasts were on 16.

Hi Joe,

Heard the transmission from the Sandy Hook area as well. Sad ...

No word from the Manasquan call. The inlet was no that bad to navigate despite the big seas.

Thanks,

Ed

Keep in mind, if you're out on the water and you hear the PanPan come across 16 and you're wondering about the progress on a SAR case, you can always tune to channel 21.  This is the USCG working frequency.  IT IS UNLAWFUL TO TRANSMIT ON THIS CHANNEL.  If you have any information to lend, you may contact the USCG on channel 16 and request they switch/answer 22.  VHF-22 is the USCG/Civilian Liasion frequency.

Just some info in case you were out on the water and wished to know more about what was going on.  I'll post more info if there's a request for it.

Two things - One the CG also uses channel 83 along with 22A.  Second I heard a report of a kayaker overdue somewheres between Manasquan inlet and Shark River today or last night.  I did see a CG 130 flying around.  Not really a search pattern but looking due to his low altitude.

I just heard the same thing on the local radio news.  They found his Kayak out about 6 miles out.

He is in our prayers and thoughts as is his family and friends.

One the CG also uses channel 83 along with 22A.

Standard CG working frequencies are 21A, 23A, 81A, 83A.  22A is Civilian-to-CG liasion.  In my article, I will outline which CG Stations use which frequencies for our area.
