This week is going to be cold with a chance of rain/snow on Monday, Thursday Night & Friday.  Monday into Tuesday will bring a small, weaker Winter Storm with 1-2 inches possible for Northern/Northwestern NJ, with less than an inch to other areas, even rain along the coast and in Southern NJ.  The next Winter Storm potential is Thursday into Friday.  This could shape up to be a little stronger.  I will keep you updated during the week on this storm.  The area will see the lowest temperatures of the season, with possible records being broken.  High temperatures will only make it into the mid to high 20's most of the week with 30's on Monday, Thursday & Friday.  Lows will get down into the teens and even single digits for more interior locations.  Winds will be brisk all week, making wind chills into the negatives.  Water conditions will vary throughout the week by location.  Monday and Thursday are being rated good right now for almost all locations.  This is if the waters lay down from Sunday's winds for Monday and if the high moves out on time on Thursday.  Small Craft Advisories and even Gale Warnings are probable Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with winds to 40+ knots and seas to 5 feet inshore and 9 feet midshore.  As always, with this time of the year, if you are looking to go out, recheck the forecasts within 8-12 hours and then again before you leave.  Surf conditions will be moderate if you are ok with gusty west north westerly winds.  Wave heights will be 0-2 feet all week with 1-2 feet on Friday.

High pressure will dominate the area most of the week.  A secondary cold front will move through the area on Monday Evening bringing the coldest air mass to the region so far this Winter.  High pressure will continue through Friday when low pressure from the west will begin to influence the region.

There is going to be some type of Winter Storm for most of the state.  Northern NJ could see 1-2 inches while Central and Southern areas could see 2-4 inches.  Immediate Coastal Areas could see locally more than 4 inches as well.  Right now, it does not look like anything more than that.  A weak to moderate snow event starting mid day Friday and out of here by Friday Night.  Even tonight is too early to call anything more.

The NWS PHI has put out another briefing as well.

Re: Thursday Update on Friday's Winter Storm (Updated w/ NNJ)
« Reply #5 on: January 24, 2013, 05:28:42 PM »
The NWS PHI/Mount Holly has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Ocean, Cumberland, Cape May & Atlantic Counties.  A weak Winter Storm (low pressure) coming out of the Great Lakes will not completely phase (combine) with a low coming out of the south.  Most areas of NJ will see 1-2 inches of snow with locally up to 3 inches.  Some southern and southwestern areas could see more of 2-4 inches.  This is very dependent on track and timing.  This storm show take place around evening time and continue through the early morning, mainly a 6-8 hour event with mostly light snow conditions.  The air is very dry, with not much moisture in it above the surface so some places may see an even later start with snowfall.  Snow will be very powdery, light and "dry" due to the very cold air in place.  What would equate to less than a 1/4 inch of rain, could easily produce 1-3 inches of snow with the temperatures across the area.  There is the possibility of some blowing snow with reduced visibility due to the winds and type of snow.  Obviously icing and icy road conditions is a concern as well, with high temps not making it above the freezing mark!

This should be a relatively quick storm with not too many concerns.  Rush hour commute home tomorrow night could be impacted so plan accordingly and most of all be SAFE!

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM FRIDAY TO 1 AM EST
SATURDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW, WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM FRIDAY TO
1 AM EST SATURDAY.

* ACCUMULATIONS...1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW WITH LOCALLY 3 INCHES.

* TIMING...LIGHT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD THE AREA FROM WEST
TO EAST FRIDAY AFTERNOON. BY EARLY EVENING, IT SHOULD BE SNOWING
ACROSS ALL AREAS. THE SNOW IS THEN EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF AROUND
  MIDNIGHT.

* IMPACTS...GIVEN THE CONTINUATION OF VERY COLD CONDITIONS ACROSS
THE ENTIRE AREA, THE SNOW WILL ACCUMULATE IMMEDIATELY. THE START
TIME OF THE SNOW SHOULD AFFECT THE FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING
COMMUTE. UNTREATED ROADS AND WALKWAYS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED,
RESULTING IN AREAS OF HAZARDOUS TRAVEL.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER 20S.

* VISIBILITIES...AS LOW AS ONE MILE AT TIMES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE
TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED
VISIBILITIES, AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

WHILE THE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ON THE LIGHTER SIDE,
THE COMBINATION OF THE VERY COLD CONDITIONS, FALLING SNOW AND
TIMING SHOULD HAVE A GREATER IMPACT ON THE LATE AFTERNOON AND
EVENING COMMUTE. DRIVE AT A SLOWER SPEED AND USE EXTRA CAUTION,
ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAVELING ON BRIDGES AND OTHER ELEVATED SURFACES
AS THEY TEND TO BECOME EVEN MORE SLIPPERY.
